One fee against three
eBay presents a single final value fee, set by category and applied to the whole order. Etsy presents a transaction fee, a payment-processing percentage with a fixed amount attached, and a listing fee charged per item. Stacked, Etsy's percentages still land below eBay's general-category rate — but the arithmetic is harder to do in your head, which is most of why sellers guess wrong about this pair in both directions.
The fixed portions matter more than the difference between them suggests. Etsy attaches more fixed cost per sale than eBay does, so eBay closes some of the gap at the cheapest prices and Etsy's advantage widens as the price climbs. The table below shows where that happens rather than asserting it.
The comparison is fee-only on purpose
Etsy charges its listing fee whether or not the item sells, and again on renewal. A calculator that models a completed sale cannot see the cost of the listings that did not sell, and on slow-moving inventory that cost is not a rounding error. If your sell-through is low, the fee-per-sale number on this page is optimistic for Etsy in a way it is not for eBay.
The catalogs also barely overlap. Etsy admits handmade, vintage, and craft-supply goods; a large share of ordinary resale inventory is not eligible at all.
