A referral fee against a final value fee
TikTok Shop charges a referral fee on the buyer-paid order, with a lower rate on pre-owned goods and a reduced rate on the portion of very large orders above its threshold. eBay charges a category-set final value fee plus a per-order amount. TikTok's headline rate is well under half eBay's general-category rate, and it carries no fixed per-order charge, so the advantage is proportionally largest exactly where eBay is weakest — cheap items.
What the gap does not include is promotion. TikTok Shop's affiliate programme, which is how a large share of its volume actually moves, costs a commission on top of the referral fee, set by the seller. A seller paying affiliates has a materially higher real rate than the row in the table below, and the honest comparison sets the ad rate field above to whatever they are actually paying.
A newer schedule is a less settled one
TikTok Shop has changed its US fee structure more than once since launch, including introductory rates that expired. The schedule this calculator runs on is transcribed from TikTok's own published fee page with the date it was verified and an archived copy of the source, because on a marketplace this young the risk is not that the arithmetic is wrong but that the rate moved last month.
eBay's schedule moves too, but slowly and with notice.
